Hiatal Hernia Repair
Relieve discomfort and restore your digestive health
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of your stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into your chest. The diaphragm is a muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen and helps with breathing. Normally, the stomach stays below the diaphragm, but when it slips through an opening called the hiatus, it can cause uncomfortable symptoms like:
- Acid reflux or GERD (heartburn)
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chest pain
- Bloating or belching
How the Procedure Works
At BetterYou Surgical, our expert team uses minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques whenever possible to ensure faster recovery and smaller incisions. During the procedure:
- The herniated stomach is gently pulled back into the abdomen.
- The opening in the diaphragm (hiatus) is tightened with sutures.
- In some cases, we also reinforce the area with surgical mesh.
Often, a fundoplication is performed—wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophagus—to help prevent acid reflux.
When is Surgery Needed?
While mild cases can be managed with lifestyle changes or medication, surgical repair may be recommended if:
- Symptoms are severe or persistent
- Medications no longer provide relief
- There is a risk of complications like strangulation or bleeding
Recovery
Most patients go home the same or next day and return to normal activity within 2–3 weeks. We provide detailed guidance on diet and healing after surgery to ensure long-term success.
