Heller Myotomy
What is Heller Myotomy?
Heller Myotomy is a surgical procedure used to treat achalasia, a rare condition where the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) — the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus — does not relax properly. This causes difficulty swallowing, chest discomfort, and food getting stuck in the esophagus.
Why Would Someone Need This Surgery?
You may benefit from Heller Myotomy if you:
✅ Have been diagnosed with achalasia
✅ Struggle with swallowing food or liquids
✅ Experience frequent regurgitation or chest pain
✅ Have tried medications or balloon dilation with limited relief
How Does Heller Myotomy Work?
During the procedure:
- The surgeon makes a small incision in the muscle layer of the lower esophagus and upper part of the stomach.
- This relieves pressure by allowing the tight muscles to relax, helping food pass easily into the stomach.
- The inner lining of the esophagus remains intact.
Heller Myotomy is often performed minimally invasively using laparoscopic or robot-assisted techniques, which means quicker recovery and less discomfort.
Benefits of Heller Myotomy
- Improved ability to swallow and eat normally
- Relief from pressure and chest pain
- Minimally invasive approach faster healing
- Long-lasting results
What to Expect After Surgery
- Most patients notice immediate improvement in swallowing.
- Some may need to eat soft foods for a few days after surgery.
- In some cases, a partial fundoplication (wrapping part of the stomach around the esophagus) is done at the same time to prevent acid reflux.
